Utilizing 3DEXPERIENCE Included in Your SOLIDWORKS Desktop License

By Sawyer Gara on June 19, 2023

If you attended 3DEXPERIENCE World 2023 in Nashville or tuned in to the live-streams then you heard the great news that the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform is going to become more easily accessible starting in July! This is an extremely exciting enhancement to the SOLIDWORKS Products we know and love because it opens the door to everything the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform has to offer through the change to new SOLIDWORKS Cloud Services.

What is Happening in July?

Starting in July of 2023, every new license of SOLIDWORKS Desktop CAD is going to include Cloud Services. Your new license will come bundled with the three main roles needed for cloud collaboration: 3DSwymer, Collaborative Industry Innovator, and Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS; giving you access to the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform. This entitles one named user to utilize the SOLIDWORKS Cloud Services and is applicable for SOLIDWORKS Standard, Professional, and Premium. This change also applies to both Standalone and Network license types. For example, if a company had 10 users sharing a network license containing five seats of SOLIDWORKS Standard, they would have five named-users eligible for Cloud Services. The additional users can be brought on by purchasing their own named-user access of the three bundled roles.

These Cloud Services provide a link to the powerful cloud-based data and lifecycle management tools on the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform. Keep in mind that existing SOLIDWORKS licenses are not eligible for the change and are not automatically given access to the Cloud Services. However, existing SOLIDWORKS Desktop Licenses can make use of an upgrade path to get access to the tools but are not explicitly required to do so.

Why do we care?

The Cloud Services accessed through the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform provide powerful, cloud-based collaboration and product lifecycle tools. Each named-user will be able to securely store and revise their designs on the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform to easily track changes and revisions or even review their files from any device, anywhere in the world with an internet connection. To take this a step further, the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform has a whole suite of tools tailored to management and control: allowing for the tracking of tasks and resources that lead up to a product release. By utilizing the Cloud Services all the teams design data and related documentation can live in a single ecosystem providing a single source of truth and reducing the amount of duplicate, redundant work when working together. Lastly, with the design data securely stored in the cloud, collaboration with external stakeholders has never been easier. Sharing the 3D Models from the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform can be opened on any internet capable device allowing for markup and review without needing to download and install any software!

3DEXPERIENCE Markup and review

SOLIDWORKS users will be able to access the built-in data management system directly inside of their familiar SOLIDWORKS Window. Saving and opening files from the connected, cloud-based data management system is a breeze and ensures that any designs changes are pushed to everyone with access to the data. The Cloud Services provide a seamless transition from working disconnected and local to connected and cloud-based.

How do we Utilize it?

During the purchase process of a new license, you will want to appoint someone as the 3DEXPERIENCE Administrator. Once the order is processed, that user will receive an email to activate the tenant on the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform. At this point the administrator can follow along with our Getting Started Guide or contact us for a more formal onboarding session!
