TriMech Cloud Primer 101: Location Freedom

By Sarah Taylor on June 8, 2020

Now more than ever, design teams are looking for the best ways to stay connected to ensure seamless interactions between different areas of their organization. From idea creation and product design to social collaboration and data management, there are many software solutions that could be used in each step of the process. But with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, all the best tools are incorporated in one interconnected, cloud-based ecosystem.

Because it is cloud-based, and not installed on individual computers, 3DEXPERIENCE allows your team to stay connected with total location freedom. Each member of your team will be able to access the best of Dassault’s tools from any device, anywhere with an internet connection. Real-time collaboration and file storage will keep your team up to date and ensure your business processes run smoothly and often faster.

The 3DEXPERIENCE Platform is Device Agnostic

SOLIDWORKS On AppleCloud-based tools are not like traditional software you install on individual computers or a shared internal network. Instead, they live on protected external servers that are accessed via a web browser and an internet connection. This means that your 3DEXPERIENCE tools can be accessed whether you’re on your work PC, home Mac or mobile device. It doesn’t matter what operating system you are using like it does with traditional software. This gives every user complete device freedom! There are no serial numbers tying you to a specific machine, or servers that you have to VPN into if you need access from somewhere other than the office. To access your entire platform of cloud-based tools, simply log in using your individual user credentials, and the power of Dassault is at your fingertips wherever you are. In the screenshot below, you can see the 3DSwym Community page open in Safari on my iPad, which is the same as it would look in FireFox on my office PC.

Real-Time Collaboration

Using the platform’s cloud-based tools allows for real-time updates and collaboration. Because the 3DEXPERIENCE platform was built with the design process in mind, your team will be able to track ideas, collaborate through social channels and keep files up to date instantly. This level of visibility across your team will ensure everyone is on the same page no matter where they are. Design teams now more than ever need the freedom to collaborate with ease from any location, whether that means working from different offices, from home or while traveling.

Cloud Tools Work WITH Your Desktop Software

Although you have remote access to the platform, the 3DEXPERIENCE cloud-based tools are not a replacement for your current desktop design software, but rather a complement. Because 3DEXPERIENCE is a Dassault Systèmes product, it will connect seamlessly with your other Dassault software such as SOLIDWORKS. Another advantage is that the user interface is also very similar. Anyone who has used SOLIDWORKS will instantly feel at home modeling in the platform.

SOLIDWORKS xDesignEven tools and applications found exclusively on the 3DEXPERENCE platform are designed to work with existing Dassault Systèmes products, not replace them. Looking at xDesign for example, which is feature-based parametric solid modeler on the platform, there are several ways it has been designed to complement existing SOLIDWORKS workflows and speed up the process:

  • Designs can immediately be posted on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform for internal review, or review by clients and stakeholders, using the 3DPlay app which allows a full model preview without needing a SOLIDWORKS seat.
  • Some edits and design changes to SOLIDWORKS files can be made directly using xDesign on the cloud, and for those that require the full functionality of SOLIDWORKS, there is a plugin that allows you to access all online files directly from your desktop version. Simply download the part or assembly, edit and re-upload for additional review all without opening your web browser.
  • Since xDesign and the 3DEXPERIENCE platform are on the cloud, other teammates or clients can provide feedback from any device, even a mobile tablet, so you don’t need to wait for them to be at their workstation computer to contribute.

Precise Data Management With Remote Access

Using add-in applications like 3DEXPERIENCE Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), you can still utilize SOLIDWORKS for creating and modifying CAD files, with the bonus that your data will be managed and stored in the 3DEXPERIENCE Collaborative Space in the cloud. Again, this increased visibility will ensure that your design process is being managed in real-time, no matter where the files are created or edited. In the screenshot below, you can see the PLM Services add-in for managing SOLIDWORKS data in the cloud.

The 3DEXPERIENCE platform is a BUSINESS EXPERIENCE platform. Your teams can have access to best-in-class software solutions from anywhere in the world. This can certainly improve team collaboration and help you speed up your production process.
