Save and Restore Your Customizations and UI in SOLIDWORKS

By TriMech Marketing on June 25, 2020

It’s no secret that SOLIDWORKS has the flexibility that allows it to be heavily customized. Sometimes these customizations can add up to some serious time savings. Having commonly used commands at convenient fingertips really does make designing much easier. In this week’s Video Tech Tip, we show you how you can take advantage of these settings so you can customize them.

Using the Copy Settings Wizard in SOLIDWORKS

This is an important tip for designers who might travel and work on a different machine or for anyone looking to upgrade their system. Instead of spending time recreating your shortcuts and customizations, you can leverage the power of the Copy Settings Wizard to save a file that captures your settings.

The Copy Settings Wizard is used to save or load your settings into SOLIDWORKS. The settings you can save are:

  • System options
  • Toolbar layout (All toolbars or only the Macro toolbar)
  • Keyboard shortcuts
  • Mouse gestures
  • Menu customizations
  • Saved views

Did you know there are six different areas you can customize your SOLIDWORKS system?
It’s easy to use the Copy Settings Wizard. You can launch the tool from either within SOLIDWORKS or from the start menu and choose whether you want to save or load your settings.

You’ll have to have a settings file to load, so if this is your first time using the tool, you’ll want to make sure you save out your settings. Make sure you keep the file in a safe place – somewhere on the cloud or on a USB stick so you can easily access them from anywhere.

With your SOLIDWORKS settings saved, you’ll be able to make sure you always use your customizations—the things that really help you model as quick as possible.
