Printing the Strongest 3D Parts with ULTEM 1010

   By on October 25, 2017

Do you have demanding applications that require 3D printing strong parts? Then this blog is for you. We will explore Stratasys’ strongest industrial-grade FDM thermoplastic, ULTEM 1010, what applications it is used for and how it differs from other materials in the ULTEM family.

What is ULTEM?
Printing the Strongest 3D Parts with ULTEM 1010The Stratasys ULTEM Resin is an amorphous thermoplastic polyetherimide (PEI) resin that offers outstanding elevated thermal resistance, high strength and stiffness and broad chemical resistance. It is often used in the aerospace, automotive and medical industries for demanding applications that no other thermoplastic can handle. Stratasys supplies ULTEM 9085 to customers for production-grade parts. It is a superior product for applications that require toughness, flexibility and UL 94 V0 Burn certification.

Recently, Stratasys added ULTEM 1010 to their material lineup, which compliments the properties of ULTEM 9085 and expands the applications that can be printed with ULTEM.

What is ULTEM 1010?

Known as the next generation of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) ULTEM, ULTEM 1010 is one of the most popular grades of Polyetherimide (PEI) Thermoplastic. With the highest tensile strength of any FDM material, coupled with highest temperature and chemical resistance, ULTEM 1010 offers bio compatible, breakaway support material.

ULTEM 1010 vs ULTEM 9085

Below you can see basic specs of both ULTEM materials and how they compare to each other. Where ULTEM 1010 excels in tensile strength, temperature and chemical resistance, ULTEM 9085 is still ideal for toughness and flexibility.

Best Applications for ULTEM 1010

  • Aerospace: Non-FST components such as ducts, clips, semi-structural components (non-interior)
  • Automotive: Under the hood
  • Food Production: Baking sheets, patterns, dies, fixtures
    • Food contact certified (NSF 51)
    • Sterilizable autoclave able
  • Medical: Custom tools and fixtures, surgical guides, custom trays
    • Biocompatible (USP Class VI/ISO 10993)
    • Sterilizable autoclave able

Overall, UTLEM 1010 is a great compliment to the high performance materials offered by Stratasys.
