Know Your Materials: Diran

Diran (Diran 410MF07) is an FDM nylon-based thermoplastic filament material that is perfect for manufacturing tooling applications. This new material is specifically ideal for jigs, fixtures and typical manufacturing tooling that require a non-marring interface that has interactions between the tool and the work piece. What is Diran?

It is an engineering thermoplastic filament that is nylon-based and is 7% mineral filled by weight. The material is exclusive to the Stratasys F370. It provides a high level of toughness and impact strength that is impressive due to its resistance to hydrocarbon-based chemicals. It also offers a smooth, lubricious surface quality with low sliding resistance. It uses SUP4000B as a breakaway support system which is the only of its kind available on the F370. This material can be sanded, painted, bonded, machined, media blasted, drilled, etc.

Printing Technology: FDM

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology uses production-grade thermoplastics to create parts that are designed to be accurate, easily replicated and stable over time. The FDM process allows for 3D printing with the most commonly used thermoplastics, such as ABS, polycarbonate, a variety of blends, as well as engineered thermoplastics for aerospace, medical, automotive, electronic and other specialty applications.

When printing on an FDM machine you tend to get stronger parts since you are working with thermal plastics. If you plan on testing your parts in a strenuous process, FDM may be the better choice than PolyJet. These materials specialize in high tensile strength and resistance to high temperatures.

Helpful Tips & Tricks

  • Special Build Tray: This material does require a separate build tray to avoid warping because it runs at a higher temperature than any other F123 Series material. It is also recommended that you consider using heat resistant gloves to remove the build tray and parts. You will not need a dedicated head for the model or support material since it uses the standard F370 print head.
  • Moisture Management: Due to its unique composition, this material is more sensitive to moisture compared to other F370 materials. Avoid letting it sit in ambient air even for an hour or the material may become unprintable. Also, avoid letting it sit unused in the printer for more than 24 hours. Even with continuous printing, the material can only remain optimized for three weeks in the material bay.
  • Print Modes: This material comes with two build modes, normal and thin-wall. Thin-wall build mode will reduce the temperature and should be used with parts smaller than 0.5 mm.
