Highlights from AMUG 2023

By TriMech Marketing on April 14, 2023

Andrew Miller and Bill Resch, Additive Solutions Consultants for TriMech traveled to the Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG) in Chicago, to find out about the latest 3D printing advancements and applications. They spoke to our partners Stratasys and DyeMansion to learn more about the technology being showcased this year.

What’s New and Exciting at AMUG 2023

What is the Neo?

Eric Yeung, Commercial Lead for SL & P3 technologies at Stratasys explains, we’re here at AMUG 2023 to showcase the Neo 450, a stereolithography 3D printer. We have a great upgrade path for existing SLA users, offering more power, higher performance, and better surface quality parts, but this machine is a great option for those looking to adopt SLA technology too.

One benefit of this machine is that it has a larger platform than other SLA technology available on the market. The Neo 450 has a build platform of 17.72 x 17.72 x 15.75″ (450 x 450 x 400 mm) and the larger Neo 800’s platform is 31.5 x 31.5 x 23.6″ (800 x 800 x 600 mm). Both machines are equipped with a 2-watt laser and offer HD and SD modes. They offer fast build speeds for maximum productivity and throughput, with less finishing work required.

What is the value of having an open system like the Neo?

Both the Neo and the Origin One machines are opens systems that allow the client to work with a variety of material suppliers. The benefit of that is that each supplier is dedicated to providing a solution. So, we are able to match the customer demand and the solution together. And that drives the successfulness of our entire industry.

What has been your favorite workshop that Stratasys has done so far?

Speaking of open systems, we are actually having a workshop here at AMUG 2023 to speak about our FDM system, the Fortus 450mc and how we can open our machines to adapt to other third-party materials. So that is very exciting, and I am looking forward to that!

What products do you offer for cleaning and surfacing?

Emily from Dye Mansion talks about the difference between the PowerShot C and the PowerShot S. Which are Cleaning and Surfacing pieces of equipment from Dye Mansion. So, first of all, the PowerShot C is for Cleaning. It’s going to be a mechanical shot peening, using glass media to de-powder the parts.

The next step is going to be the PowerShot S. The PowerShot S stands for Surfacing. So, in comparison to the glass beads, it’s going to use a polymer coated bead to create a semi-gloss and therefore smooth surface, that is scratch resistant.

You can see on this card the difference between the PowerShot C and PowerShot S finishing.

Do you have the ability to dye parts?

So, another specialty that Dye Mansion offers is the ability to add colors. Our dying equipment is called a DM60 and that is a deep dye coloring. So, in comparison to the traditional pot dying, that is going to be a stain on the surface. Our dying process under temperature and pressure creates a chemical reaction. That’s going to bind to the polymer of the part. So therefore, at the end you get a permanent color that will not transfer and is also biocompatible and food safe.

Do you offer a solution for polypropylene?

Lester Hitch from Dye Mansion tells us about the polypropylene smoothing machine, which is one of DyeMansion’s newer applications for their smoothing technology, which they call VaporFuse surfacing. The machine is called the PowerFuse PP, the PP stands for polypropylene.

It’s focused on smoothing all the polypropylene powder bed materials that you have on the market right now. So, you can see here, this is a great example where an un-smoothed part is highly impressionable to grease and oils, whereas a smooth part seals the surface and gives it an all-black aesthetic.

This isn’t a dye this is straight from the machine, and it makes for a much more improved robust functioning part.
